What can I expect to happen once I decide I want to try hypnotherapy?

If you decide you are interested in finding out more about
hypnotherapy, the best way to start is for us to talk over the phone.
This will allow you to give me a brief overview of what you would like
to work on and to set up an initial session.  You can also ask me any
questions about the process you have.

Generally, the first session will be an information generating session,
which will not include hypnosis.  This is so that I gain a full
understanding of what you would like to work on and what path is
most appropriate for you personally.  You will also be asked to
complete an intake form  with your personal information and brief
medical history and a consulting agreement for both of us to sign.
This will be followed by an in-depth discussion of what you want to
    work on, including:
  • History of the issue, including previous self-sabotage
  • Outline of mutual hypnotherapy goals

The second session will include hypnotic questioning to uncover any
underlying, root causes of the issue.  The second session should be 4-
7 days after the first session.

Thereafter, all the sessions will focus around hypnosis, including
positive suggestions that will address the root cause of the issue as
well as the symptoms.  These sessions will usually be once a week,
but can be more or less often as desired.

After the third session, I will make you a self-hypnosis tape that will
allow you to reinforce the relaxation techniques and positive
suggestions that will focus on achieving your agreed upon goals.

What will happen during a hypnosis session?

During a hypnosis session I will bring you into hypnosis, using various
induction techniques that will relax your conscious mind and body
and make the subconscious mind more accessible.  This usually takes
5-10 minutes.  Once you are in hypnosis, the therapy begins.  In some
sessions this may be an interactive process, where you will be able to
respond to my questions either using hand signals or verbally, or it
may just be a process where your subconscious mind contemplates
my positive reinforcements.  This typically takes 20-35 minutes.  Once
the issue has been resolved or the suggestions have been made, you
will be brought out of hypnosis.  You will feel relaxed, but full of
energy and confidence your new positive outlook has been integrated
    into your life.

How long does a session last?

Sessions are usually 55 minutes long.  However, exploratory sessions,
such as the second session, may take up to two hours.  For these I
leave the time open ended, so that we are not rushing through the
process and have to stop mid-way, because of time restrictions.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis feels slightly different for everyone, depending on how deep
they go and what emotions come up.  However, there is a consistent
feeling of deep physical and mental relaxation.  Your limbs may feel
heavy, or light and tingly.  You may also feel slight twitches in your
body as your nervous system relaxes, and your breathing will relax
and shift to abdominal (parasympathetic) breathing.  Some describe
hypnosis as similar to the feeling when you hit the snooze button on
your alarm clock and you don’t fall completely back to sleep.  You are
aware that you are lying in bed with your eyes closed, but your mind
floats freely from image to image.  Time often feels distorted in
hypnosis, with 15 minutes feeling more like 5 minutes.  You will come
out of hypnosis with a relaxed, but energized and almost euphoric,
feeling of well-being.  Remember, hypnosis is a natural state of mind,
so you will not feel any unnatural, drastic changes in your awareness.

How many sessions does it take before I notice a change?

Hypnotherapy is an extremely fast and effective form of therapy.
Unlike other forms of therapy, changes will be realized quickly and
therefore it does not require months or years of weekly therapy.  After
just one hypnosis session you will feel a change in how relaxed you
feel.  That will be a key step in changing your approach your life,
    improving your mind and body.

The exact number of sessions it will take to resolve your issue will
depend on the issue itself, as well as how motivated you are to make
the change.  Typically, we will know after the third session how many
sessions you will need to resolve your issue.  Most people find that
they have made significant strides towards their goals after 4-5
hypnosis sessions.  However, you will notice your subconscious mind
prompting your conscious mind with positive thoughts about your
desired changes almost immediately.  It is up to you then to act on
these cues and make the long-lasting changes to your life.

Is Hypnotherapy effective?

Hypnotherapy is significantly more effective than most other forms of
therapy because it directly accesses the subconscious mind, which is
where emotional and physical triggers lie.  For this reason it is
important for the underlying cause of the physical or emotional issue
to be discovered and addressed, as just removing the symptoms may
result in the issue manifesting in other ways or a recurrence.  Whether
or not the changes resulting from hypnotherapy are permanent also
largely depends on the willingness of the client to make the sought
    after change in their life.

How do I choose a Hypnotherapist?

As with choosing any health care professional, you should look for a
Hypnotherapist that has a way of working that you feel completely
comfortable with.  The most important part of this is establishing and
growing a good rapport - that is, having a feeling of connection with
the therapist as a person, and not just as a professional.  You must
feel safe enough with your Hypnotherapist to seek resolution of the
deep-rooted causes of what you want to work on.  You must also trust
your Hypnotherapist to be focused on your agenda and not their own
agenda.  They must listen to you and understand your needs, as well
as be experienced and professional.  Finally, you must also like the
sound of their voice and be comfortable with their communication
skills.  For any of these reasons, after you speak to me, you may not
think that I am the right Hypnotherapist for you.  If this is the case, I
would be happy to recommend other Hypnotherapists that you may
    feel more comfortable working with.

Will I become dependent on my Hypnotherapist?

Unlike some other therapies, you will not develop a dependency on
your Hypnotherapist since hypnotherapy is a short-term, goal-oriented
    therapy.

What if I like what I have read and want to work with you, but I don’t live near
you?

My office is in North San Jose, but if you do not live in the Bay Area
you can contact me regarding telephone sessions.  Although it is
preferable for us to have at least one in-person session, if this is not
possible, we will talk over the phone in the first session and I will then
custom record a personalized self-hypnosis tape/CD for you.  I will
then follow up with you the following week for another phone session,
to discuss your progress and if the self-hypnosis tape/CD should be
modified to meet your changing life realizations.

Do I need to see a Hypnotherapist or do audio tapes work as well?

Self-hypnosis tapes do not usually focus on a person’s specific issues
and therefore will give you only general results.  A person usually has
faster and more long-lasting results if they are treated as individuals,
so a more personalized approach is better.  However, there may not be
a good Hypnotherapist in your area, in which case my personalized,
custom recorded self-hypnosis tapes/CDs are the next best choice to
    an in-person session.

How much does Hypnotherapy cost?

Because Hypnotherapy is a short term, holistic approach, it is much
more cost effective than other more traditional therapies.  Please
contact me for more information about specific prices.
